Jerry Doyle Atkinson was a son of Robert P Atkinson and Mary Francis Segrest of Auburn, Alabama.
He enlisted in the Marines 29 June 1965, at a
Los Angeles Recruiting Office. Two years later he married Suzanne Mcaffee on 6 September 1967 in Monterrey, CA.
Jerry arrived in Vietnam 27 September 1968 and was assigned to Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 27th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Lcpl Roger Thomas Brown from Kittanning PA and Corp Atkinson died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the head and body from hostile mortar fire while in a night defensive position in the vicinity of Ba Tung, six kilometers southeast of the Danang Airfield Base.
His sweet wife Suzanne gave birth to their son five weeks after Jerry's death. She blessed their son by gifting him the name of his brave father.
Survived by his widow, Suzanne M Atkinson and his son of 26359 Eshelmen Ave, Lomita, his mother, Mary Francis S Atkinson of 4608 W 173rd St, Lomita, CA and his father Robert P Atkinson of Mobile, AL.
His mother was born in Auburn, AL and died 8 March 2008 in San Diego, CA (Dau of George & Lottie).
His father was born in W Virginia and died 20 October 1983 in Mobile, AL. (Majority of bio courtesy of Tony.)

On April 6, 1968, fellow Lawndale High School classmate, Class of '65, Bobby Joe Gravel, was killed in action while serving as a Specialist Four with 3RD PLT, C CO, 2ND BN, 7TH CAVALRY, 1ST CAV DIV, USARV, Army of the United States. Honored be his name.

"I grew up across the street from Jerry and his family. I still remember coming home from school and seeing my mom in tears. She had just heard that Jerry was killed in Viet Nam. We went to his funeral, and it was a very sad day for the whole neighborhood." Glenda Reed
"Jerry was a kind and thoughtful young man, he treated everyone with respect, especially the girls. He had thoughts of college, getting married, children, thoughts we all had about the rest of our lives. Jerry had one more thought, the thought of joining the service and serving his country as a Marine." Pat Underwood
"Jerry and a few others, including me, joined the Marines together. They were; Tony Blackwood, Norman Engle, Vic Corey, Frank Domenick, Currie Clement, and Jerry Atkinson.
