On 02 Feb 1967, the 283rd Medical Detachment, a component of the 498th Medical Company (Air Ambulance), had a medevac helicopter shot down in Bien Hoa Province, South Vietnam. The Huey, UH-1D tail number 65-12881, was hit by .51 caliber heavy machine gun fire and went in from about 800 feet. All aboard the aircraft were killed including PFC Philip H. Johnson, crew chief, from Redondo Beach, California.
