Alexander was born in Banffshire on 13 March 1869, but lived at 37, Waterloo Road, Hakin, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, with his wife Jessie while serving at HMS Idaho, the base at Milford Haven. He served as Deck Hand aboard H.M. Drifter Barbara Cowie, which had been converted for minesweeping duties. Alexander took ill while at sea and was taken ashore to a hospital at Blackwater, Ireland, where he died on 4 October 1916 aged 47. He is buried in Blackwater (Killila) Graveyard, Ireland. His widow Jessie returned to her native Scotland.

Alexander Ritchie Baker, married, aged 48, a Seaman of the Royal Naval Reserve, died at Rosslare Pier, on 4 October 1916.
The cause of death was "accidentally drowned by boat upsetting".
His death was registered on foot of information received from William C. Lawler, Coroner for North Wexford, following an inquest held on 23 October 1916. It was registered on 26 October 1916.
