His birth does not seem to have been registered, but in the 1911 census, he was noted as being aged 2, the 8th of their 8 children.
88 Regiment was established in 1939, and served in Britain from 1939 until August 1941, when it was deployed to North Africa. It was later incorporated into the 8th Army and served in Italy until its suspension in September 1944.
Its principal weapon was a QF 3.7in AA gun.
The regiment usually comprised 3 batteries, each with 8 guns in 2 troops.
In Africa, its role included anti-tank warfare, whereas in Italy its use was as a traditional field artillery weapon.
