DERBY - Alley, Katherine R., 100, homemaker, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003. Visitation with family 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Hillside Funeral Home, East Chapel, Wichita. Service 10 a.m. Saturday, Derby Church of Christ with Mr. Larry Scarth officiating. Burial will follow in El Paso Cemetery.

Katherine Alley was born April 10, 1903 to Charles S. Berger and Alice McWilliams Berger at their farm home 3 miles east of Derby. When she was five, her family moved to a farm about five miles east of Douglass, where she attended country schools and graduated from Douglass High School in 1921. She played varsity basketball all four years in high school. She attended Emporia Normal School in preparation for teaching at Superior and Pleasant Center rural schools northeast of Rose Hill.

She met William A. Alley at a church service held at Superior school. They were married at Katherine's parents farm home east of Douglass on Dec. 23, 1923. They farmed at various farms northeast of Rose Hill until moving to Derby in August 1955. Katherine worked at the Derby Public School's kitchen and will be remembered for her bread and cinnamon rolls made there in the sixties and seventies. She was a member of the Derby Church of Christ where she attended until illness prevented her attending.

She was preceded in death by her husband William in 1977 and her son Ronald in 1943, her parents, her brothers, Herbert Berger, Harlan Berger and Robert Berger and sisters Hazel Berger, Florence Barnes and Jessie Brown.

Survivors: sons, William C. of Wichita, Mark of Drexel, MO, Marion of Wichita, Gary of Derby, Donald of Winfield; daughters, Wilma Austin of Columbia, MO, Shirley Walters of Woodstock, GA, Elaine Kohner of Winona, MN, Sondra Drake of Parker, TX; brother, Woodrow W. Berger of Wichita; 29 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to Maude Carpenter Childrens Home, 1501 N. Meridian, Wichita, KS 67203.
