HOUSTON DAILY NEWS November 14, 1889
"Last night at 11:00 the death of MRS SCHERFFIUS, wife of Capt. HENRY SCHERFFIUS, well known in this part of the state, occured at their home on Fountain St corner of Clay. It was one of the saddest that has occured in this city for a long time. She was the mother of 9 children, the youngest not yet 6 years old, and 4 under the age of 6 years. She was one of the noblest christian women of this land, was a devoted wife and loving mother, remembering always their their duties and those of a good christian. The destresses and sorrows and anxioties of her husband and children were hers, and she was the comforter that only a few in this life know how to be, because only a few so live on the thoroughly understand the hearts of those who are near and dear to them. all whgo knew her loved the many beautiful traits of character that have ever been hers. In the familky circle her life was bright, but her rare social virtues made her beloved by all whose good fortune led them near the pathway of her life. Over 22 years ago she was wedded to CAPT. HENRY SCHERFFIUS, her maiden name was MISS. EMILY BRENARD. She leaves a sister, MRS> MUIR of Austin, 2 half-brothers, HURLEY & GEORGE BRENARD of this city and a number of other relatives. She appeared to be dangerously ill for only a short time before her death which was caused from typhoid . The funeral took place this afternoon from Christ Church and the remains were followed to their final resting place in GLENWOOD CEMETERY by a large number of sorrowing friends.
Capt Scherffius in this dark of his greatest misfortune, has the heartfelt sympathy of many friends."

Emily's maiden name was actually BRANARD, not BERNARD, and her half-brothers were Ambrose John Hurley and Charles William Hurley, whose father was Ambrose William Hurley who died before the family moved to Texas. George Albert Branard and her sister Ellen MAIR (not Muir) and Emily all had the same father, George A. Branard.
Buried between her husband and her infant son in an unmarked grave.
