Upon arriving in Vietnam, Robert was assigned as the Platoon Sgt for the 1st
Platoon, Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
Robert and 3 Marines were sent to establish a 4 man night ambush site about 500 meters from the platoon base. The ambush squad did not return the following morning as planned. A search of the area was conducted with no results. The 4 man ambush squad disappeared near Hoa Hai Village and 9 kilometers north of Dien Ban.
All 4 Maries were listed as missing in action 28 August 1966. The 4 Marines were promoted while missing in action. Gysgt Borton remains were repatriated 8 February 1993 and were identified 29 March 1995. His actual date of death was listed as 24 August 1977. The remains of the 3 other Marines were recovered.
Survived by his parents, Robert Curtis Borton and Violet Juanita Washburn and a sister, Diane of Benton Harbor, MIchigan.
