Army Cpl. Baker was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Insurgents shot down a U.S. helicopter and Baker was part of a rescue team racing to the scene when a roadside bomb exploded underneath his Bradley in Abu Sayda. The crash was part of a complex attack by enemy forces who first shot down the helicopter, then used roadside bombs to kill troops rushing to the site. Zack graduated in 2002 from Vilonia High School in Vilonia, Arkansas and joined the Army in 2004. He was a true patriot who was sent to Iraq in 2005 and then volunteered to go back for a second tour. Zack was one of the most enthusiastic soldiers in his unit. He never complained about any task or detail – he would just make sure it was done right. His awards include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Army Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge and The Expert Marksmanship Badge. Zack was a good husband, father, son and brother who loved his family, his platoon, the Red Sox and the Arkansas Razorbacks. His family wants people to remember him as a hero who fought for his country. He wasn't just fighting for his family – he was fighting for everyone. Zack leaves behind his wife, Christina, and a son.
