Civil War Union Army Officer. He achieved lasting renown on May 10, 1865, when the cavalry detachment under his command encountered the fleeing party of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and captured him at Irwinsville, Georgia. He enlisted at age 18 on August 28, 1862, and was mustered in as a Private in Company I, 4th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. He rose steadily in the ranks, eventually being commissioned a 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant on July 15, 1864. His regiment was part of the command of Union cavalry General James H. Wilson, and it fought towards the end of the war in operations in Alabama and Georgia. When his detachment captured Jefferson Davis in May 1865 Lieutenant Dickinson was the official arresting officer. Brevetted Captain, US Volunteers for his achievement, he was honorably mustered out on August 15, 1865 in Tennessee. After the war he studied law, was admitted to the Michigan Bar Association in 1866, and had a lengthy career as a prominent attorney in Detroit, Michigan.
