Alois Bamberger was shot in the back by members of the Dutch resistance movement.
As a German retaliation measure, a total of 109 residents of Haarlem were arrested on February 1st 1943, of whom 102 were taken hostage to concentration camp Vught.
On February 2nd 1943, three Jews and seven communists were executed in the dunes near Bloemendaal. Among them were Barend Chapon, the chairman of the Jewish Council in Haarlem, and the Haarlem chief rabbi Philip Frank, the other one was Herbert Otto Drilsma.
The bodies were cremated and the ashes scattered in the sea.
All of their family members were arrested and brought to Auschwitz, where they were killed on February 12th 1943.
