In the late 2000's, Patches would sometimes come across the street to our house and hang out with me in the front yard and sometimes came inside for treats, then headed to our cat Black-Black's scratch pad (an upholstered drawer front from our old couch). She knew there would be traces of cat nip on the fabric and she loved it. Black-Black and Patches knew each other from when he was a loose stray and he sometimes went across to their front and back yards as well. Much to her parent's consternation, Patches even stayed in our side yard for a short time. I made her a cubby and built a "bunker" around it and really enjoyed having her but knew she would have to return home and she went back on her own. (She was just on a little vacation.)
Recently, Patches was starting to show her age, which is estimated to be about 17 or slightly older, and seemed troubled with something in her mouth area. As with most elder cats it was assumed it was likely a dental problem and she was taken to the veterinarian for a check-up. She did in fact have dental issues and some teeth were extracted. Unfortunately, they had also found a tumor. It was tested and found to be malignant. Patches came home for a few weeks, but eventually became unable or unwilling to eat and her people had to accept what they could not change and let her go. They greatly mourned her passing and will forever miss her.
