HENRY - Leland Louis "Lee" Hofer, 89, of Henry died at 4:08 a.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at the LaSalle Veterans Home.
Lee was born March 1, 1925, in the Henry Hospital in Henry, Ill., to Louise E. and Alta (Rinehart) Hofer. He married Shirley M. Danhof on April 7, 1951, in Henry, Ill. She preceded him in death on Aug. 15, 2012.
To their union were born seven children and he was very proud of his family, Sharon (Gary) Koehler and Robert Hofer, both of Henry, Janet (Bob) Thornton of Clifton Hills, Mo., Roger (Leslie) Hofer, Leona (Bill) Buser and Gary (Jenny) Hofer, all of Henry, and Susie Lingemann of Ottawa. Lee also enjoyed 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Lee had five siblings; surviving are Dorothy Monier of Lacon, Marj McAllister of Chillicothe and Louis Hofer of Morton.
His parents; two brothers, Edwin and Harold "Sarg" Hofer; and a grandson, Bobby Hofer, preceded him in death.
Lee graduated from Henry High School in 1943 and joined the United States Navy three months later. He served 25 months overseas on the LST 456 in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was part of the last invasion of World War II in July of 1945 before returning home.
Five years later, he married his lovely bride and farmed in Henry. In 1960, Lee and his brother, Harold, built the bowling alley, Hofer's Lanes. Lee sold it in 1973 and was employed by BF Goodrich. He retired from there in 1989 and spent the rest of his life in Henry.
During his retirement years, Lee was instrumental in getting World War II LST 325 (Landing ship tank) to come to Henry for a visit. He was an active member of the Henry American Legion, St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 26, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Henry. Mass of Christian burial will follow at noon. Fr. Tom Mizeur will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Henry, where full military rites will be accorded.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society .
