Early in life, Fred worked for the West End Coal Company as a laborer at the coal breaker. Then he worked for the railroad as a brakeman, and later as an engineer. In the 1940s he worked for the American Car and Foundry Company in Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. His first wife, Elizabeth, died in 1926. On May 28, 1941, he married the widow Ethel Kline (my grandmother) at Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
