My Wonderful Mom - Phyllis
Wedding Anniversary 20 April 1946
Phyllis Elaine WIDDIFIELD was born on the 15th of September 1926 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana, the daughter of Clarence Eugene Widdifield and Madge Dolores GRAVES Widdifield of Indianapolis, Indiana. Phyllis had 3 brothers: Billy Gene Widdifield 1923-1925 - Dr. Garth Eugene Widdifield 1928-2014 - and Dr. Duane Alden Widdifield. Wow - things have certainly changed from 1926 to 2015! Just check out my Mom's baby walker (in her photos)!! It's a wonder babies survived.
On April 20, 1946 Phyllis married Roy Theodore "Pete" Brown, Jr. at Woodside Methodist Church in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. They were married in a DOUBLE WEDDING CEREMONY with her husband, Pete's brother, Alvin Earl Brown who married Lydia Ella Ciriello. Pete and Earl's parents were married in a Triple Wedding Ceremony - photo is on their LINKED Memorial page.
Phyllis and Pete Brown had 4 children:
1 - Carole Anne Brown
2 - Roy Theodore Brown, III
3 - Jennifer Kay Brown 1950-2011
4 - Kathy Sue Brown
Phyllis was an extremely gifted artist. Her artwork has been a great source of compliments from all over the United States and from the famous radio - television Evangelist Oral Roberts. His letter is saved in her Oral Roberts Bible. She started drawing her little boy and girl characters which she appropriately named "God's Little Blessings" then she would add a Bible verse to fit the picture. She made bookmarks, stationery, coloring books, and paper dolls. Phyllis was the Editor of the Faith Challenger - the monthly newsletter from Faith Assembly of God in Beech Grove, Indiana. She and her husband, Pete Brown were very active participants in the Church. Pete with his artistic ability in woodworking and Phyllis to compliment his works by painting them. Together they made an adorable display of Noah's Ark and animals for the Church's Nursery, and various items like a real child size Connestoga covered wagon for Vacation Bible School. Phyllis has been known for her artistic contribution to the Aquarium Hobby Club of Indianapolis, and the Greenwood Branch of the Mary Bryan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Phyllis was also a Charter Member of the Mary Bryan Chapter and served on many committees. Not only was Phyllis a talented artist, but she was also a gifted musician and played the piano and Hammond Organ that had 2 octaves of foot pedals.
Phyllis and Pete Brown owned The Fair Havens Tropical Fish & Supply Store for 25 years before retiring from it. The store was in back of their home in the Broad Ripple area and Pete was well known for breeding fancy guppies. He earned many trophies and Best of Show Ribbons on his work. Phyllis was the main caretaker of the shop until Pete came home from work. They enjoyed many great friends in their store.
Phyllis and Pete were blessed with a little surprise bundle of joy only 6 days after the birth of their first grandchild. Dad was tickled to death but Mom, being 39 years old, wasn't so happy about it, but that wore off after the birth of Kathy. The three of us kids always thought Kathy had totally different parents than we had, haha. They were much more laid back - age and experience!
My Mom could do anything she put her heart into. She could crochet the best ponchos for each one of her grandkids, baby blankets, sweaters, hats, and booties. I think always being around us kids and grandkids kept my parents young looking as they never looked their age.
Phyllis and Pete are buried in the Memorial Park East Cemetery with a shared stone. Note - I made them put their full names, birth and death dates, and wedding date on their stone. I do genealogy and I love it when people put the entire date on their stones!!
