S SGT US ARMY AIR FORCES

Davis, Patsy Elnora CHULA VISTA -- Patsy Elnora Davis, beloved wife of Otis, mother of Vance and Shaun, and charter member of Highland Avenue Baptist Church died on December 20, 2014. Patsy Elnora Davis was born Elnora Graham in Holdenville, Oklahoma on October 17, 1923. She was the eighth of nine children. Her mother was Sarah Louise Jackson and her father, Simon Peter Graham. Her family worked a tenant farm. In 1937, Elnora moved with her parents to Merced, California where they found employment in the Central Valley as migrant farm laborers. In 1941, one week after the United States entered WWII, Elnora moved to Chula Vista. She went to welding school and became a welder for Solar where she welded exhaust manifolds for P-51 fighter planes. In 1942, Elnora, along with 13 others and Rev. Haley, founded Highland Avenue Baptist Church in National City. In 1946 she married Otis Verna Davis, a returning WWII POW. In 1947 her first son, Vance Leland Davis, was born. Thirteen years later, her second son, Shaun Lee Davis was born. In 1956, between the birth of her two sons, she and Otis opened Davis Auto Body and Paint. For fifty seven years she managed all aspects of the office and did so until Otis retired in 2013, at the age of 92. Elnora never stopped her work with the church and for more than 30 years she taught Bible Studies to young adults and helped others obtain their US citizenship. She loved children and she regularly worked in the nursery so that the young parents could attend the church service. Elnora always believed in the value of an education. In the late 1950's, determined to receive her own high school diploma, she attended Sweetwater Evening High School. On graduation, she was asked to give the commencement address. Her futuristic speech: "We need a Junior College." Elnora was an avid sports enthusiast. She loved the Padres and the Lakers. But she was not just a spectator, in her early years she played on volley tennis leagues in San Diego and later, she and Otis became members of Bonita Valley Tennis Club, where she continued playing tennis into her 80's. She was a respected opponent and very proud of her double B, WTA ranking. She and Otis sponsored many teams in the South Bay. For forty years they sponsored Davis Auto Body, a softball team that played in the City of San Diego's Fast Pitch League. She and Otis regularly attended these games, sometimes as the only fans there. At family gatherings she was the organizer of the volleyball, softball, and bocce ball tournaments. Though very competitive, she made things fun for everyone. Throughout her life Elnora unselfishly gave her time, her efforts and her personal resources to help others. Elnora was a truly loving and happy person. She laughed often and made others laugh. She was always positive and would find a way to accomplish whatever her goal. She never said "I can't." We have all been blessed to have had her in our lives and will truly miss her laughter and her warm and lovely smile. God has taken her home. She was preceded in death by her mother; father; brothers: Andrew, Russell, Phillip, Delbert, J.D., and S.J.; and sisters: Earl and Mildred. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Otis, and her two sons, Vance and Shaun. Viewing is at Glen Abbey's Chapel of the Roses, January 7, 2015 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. Funeral Services are also at Chapel of the Roses, January 8, 2015 at 9:00 a.m., followed by interment at Miramar National Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. Friends and family are invited to lunch at the home of Vance and Dianna Davis following her interment.
