Davis, Otis V. CHULA VISTA -- Otis Verna Davis, owner of Davis Auto Body & Paint, died on January 9, 2015, at the age of 93. Otis Davis was born in Childress, Texas on November 9, 1921. His mother was Pearl Lou Thompson and his father, Edward Carroll Davis. Otis moved with his family to El Centro, California in 1937. On graduating from Central Union High School in 1941, he left the valley and moved to San Diego California. He got a job at Solar Aircraft delivering parts. In 1943 Otis entered the Army Air Force After flight training in the United States he was assigned to the 460th Bombardment Group (H) of the 761st Bombardment Squadron, of the Fifteenth Air Force and sent to Tunisia, North Africa as a Staff Sergeant. Once the U.S. took some of Italy, his Air Force Group relocated to Southern Italy. On April 15, 1944, while returning from a bombing mission over the Ploesti Oil Fields in Romania, he was shot down by a German fighter plane. For his conduct he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. After safely parachuting down, he was captured and taken to a German Prisoner of War Camp in Bucharest. In September, 1944, the Russians drove the Germans from Romania and freed the POWs. Grossly underweight, Otis returned to the United States, where he recuperated at a military facility in California. While recuperating, he was put in charge of the sheet metal shop. He was honorably discharged in November 1945. In 1945, while still in the Army Air Force he met Patsy Elnora Davis. They married on May 25, 1946, In 1956, Otis and Elnora opened Davis Auto Body and Paint at 120 Broadway, Chula Vista. In 1966, they purchased the property at 55 Broadway they built the shop where Davis Auto Body & Paint operated for another 48 years. Otis retired in 2013, at the age of 92. Otis is preceded in death by his beloved wife Elnora; his mother, father, and brother Travis. He is survived by his two sons, Vance and Shaun; his brothers, Bill and Roy; and sister, Betty Vasey. Viewing is at Glen Abbey's Chapel of the Roses, on February 11, 2015, 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. Funeral Services are also at Chapel of the Roses, February 12, 2015 at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Miramar National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Family, friends, employees and customers of Davis Auto Body are invited to lunch at the home of Vance and Dianna Davis following his interment.
