Mr. John E. Eder, 75, of Dolgeville, New York, beloved husband of Barbara Eder, passed away at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born on July 27, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, a son of John and Camilla Eder. John was educated at St. John the Baptist High School in Brooklyn. In October of 1958, John entered the United States Army. He specialized as a military policeman and served his country until October of 1960, when he received an honorable discharge.

On August 31, 1971, John was united in marriage to the former Barbara Simmons at Sea Side Heights, New Jersey, on the beach. The couple would have shared 40 years of marriage next month.

After his discharge from the military, John went on to become a police officer in the Brooklyn area. Shortly thereafter, he became a New York State Corrections officer and worked at several prisons downstate. In 1984 he moved to the Dolgeville area with his family. John worked at Midstate Prison in Marcy, New York until his retirement in 1998.

John was of the Catholic faith and was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Church in Dolgeville, New York. He was also a former member of the Sons of Italy Bowling Team in Brooklyn, New York. He enjoyed gardening and was a big fan of the New York Mets. He especially enjoyed spending time with his two cherished granddaughters, Cassidy and Cailyn, as well as his family. He will be dearly missed by them.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Eder at home; his loving children, his daughter, Barbara McCauley and her husband, Shaun of Dolgeville, NY and his son, John Eder and his wife, Suzanne of Portland, ME; two special granddaughters, Cassidy and Cailyn; two brothers-in-law, a special cousin, James Flanaghan of Brooklyn, NY; five nephews, three nieces, and several cousins.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 from 5-7 p.m. at Miller-Plonka Funeral Home, 30 Wolf Street, Dolgeville, New York. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning, July 27, 2011 at 8:30 in the chapel of the funeral home where prayers will be offered and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Dolgeville, NY. The mass will be celebrated by Father William Gorman, pastor. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Dolgeville, NY.

In lieu of floral contributions, please consider the Dolgeville Little League for memorial contributions. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
