Graduated in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and later Professor Emeritus at the same University, specialized in Surgery at Valley Forge General Hospital in Pennsylvania, he is know for having performed in 1954 the world's first successful kidney transplant between identical twins. Thanks to his research on the transplantation of cells and organs in the treatment of human disease, Murray is considered one of the leading specialists of the Transplantation Biology and related techniques of immunosuppression. In 1996 he was appointed Academic of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences at the Vatican. Joseph E. Murray was also the author of an autobiography entitled "Surgery Of The Soul: Reflections on a Curious Career" published in 2001. He died because of a brain hemorrhage at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
