Hall of Fame college basketball coach. Born Patricia Sue Head, from 1974 to 2012, she coached the University of Tennessee women's Lady Volunteers to eight national championships in 38 seasons and notched 1,098 career victories, more than any other Division I basketball coach. She was the first NCAA coach, and one of four college coaches overall, to achieve at least 1,000 wins, and was named NCAA Coach of the Year seven times. Summitt also played for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1976, the first year of an Olympic women's basketball tournament, and she took home a silver medal. She also won an Olympic gold medal as head coach of the 1984 U.S. Women's Basketball Team. In 2012, she was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Summitt, who co-wrote three books, "Reach for the Summitt," "Raise the Roof," and "Sum It Up," died at age 64 following a battle with Alzheimer's-type dementia.
