James G. Jones, the first mayor of Kelso and reputed to be the oldest resident of Cowlitz County, died last night shortly before 10 o'clock after a severe illness of a month's duration at the home of his daughter, Lizzie Fouth. He was 96 years old and had been a resident of Kelso since 1881. Mr. Jones had been active up until his last sickness and during the past summer attended a luncheon in Kelso where he and Ezra Meeker were the honored guests. Funeral services will begin at 1:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at Elks Temple in Kelso. During the services, a request is to be made that business be suspended in honor of the city's first mayor and oldest citizen. A proclamation asking business houses to close for the hour is to be issued by Mayor Nat R. Smith. The funeral will be in charge of Redmans Lodge of which the deceased was a member. The funeral will be public and burial will be in IOOF Cemetery in charge of Nat R. Smith Funeral Home. Three daughters and one son survive Mr. Jones. For the past several years he had made his home with one daughter, Lizzie Fouth. The others are Ella LeFavore of Walla Walla and Cynthia Martino of Freedom, Oklahoma. The son, C. S. Jones lives in Chehalis. The deceased had been a widower since 1915.
