He was on his third deployment to Iraq when he was killed when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device during a patrol in Baghdad. He graduated from Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill in 1988 with an associate's degree in liberal arts. He later earned a bachelor's degree from Campbell University, NC. He joined the US Army in 1989, serving in Korea, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Germany. He was first sent to Iraq as an engineer officer in 2003. Among his military awards and decorations were the Bronze Star Medal for valor; Bronze Star Medal; Meritorious Service Medal [2]; Army Commendation Medal [5]; Army Achievement Medal [2]; Korean Defense Service Medal; Humanitarian Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal [2]; Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Services Medal; Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia); Presidential Unit Citation; Valorous Unit Award; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; and Army Service Ribbon.

He was survived by his mother; his father; his wife of two years; a daughter; his two brothers; and his sister.

Interment on July 25, 2007.
