Bishop Joseph Vu Duy Thong was a faithful Roman Catholic priest. He also was a famous author and a wonderful song writer. He was ordained priest on Oct 26 1985 and served as Parochial Vicar of small church in Hoc Mon, Southern Viet Nam from 1985 to 1990. He was sent to France and studied at the Institut Catholique de Paris and obtained a Master's degree in theology in 1998. Later, he became professor at St Joseph Major Seminary of HCM City, Vietnam.
Pope John Paul II named him as Auxiliary Bishop of Saigon on July 4 2001 and appointed him as Bishop of Tortibulum on Aug 17 2001. His motto "Caritas Christi Urget Nos" which means "The Love of Christ Urges Us On"
He also served as head of Episcopal Commission for Cultural Affairs.

On Sept 3 2009, he was named Bishop of Phan Thiet, Viet Nam where he served until his last day. God called him home on the Ash Wednesday, March 1st 2017 after only few days in coma caused by acute lung disease.

Bishop Joseph Thong was a model of prayer, a humble priest, a great bishop and most of all a real shepherd of God's people. With his compassionate and kindness he had done great job in guarding, teaching and serving of communion. He courageously carried forth the Gospel to his flock even he had many major obstacles in his missionary. He had opened his heart, his mind and his arms to embrace his people. It is a reason they feel he is the light, the gift that God has given to this world.
He was a priest for 31.3 years and a bishop for 15.5 years.

There is a tremendous loss and deeply sadness to entire the Diocese of Phan Thiet and to those who knew and loved him.

May God bless his precious soul in perfect peace with Saints and Angels and grant him eternal life in heaven.
