Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Quang Nap, Yên Mô, Viêt Nam, Paul Joseph Pham Ðình Tung received his education at the École Puginier La Salle before entering Hoàng Nguyên's minor seminary and successively St. Sulpice's major seminary in Hà Nôi. Ordained priest in the latter city on June 6, 1949 by Msgr. Tadêô Lê Huu Tu O. Cist., apostolic vicar of Phát Diêm, he successively served as pastor of the Hàm Long parish in Hà Nôi between 1950 and 1955, when he was named superior of local St. John's minor seminary of Hà Nôi. The seminary was eventually closed by the state authority in 1960 and never opened again. Elected bishop of the diocese of Bac Ninh by Pope John XXIII, he received his episcopal consecration on August 15, 1963 inside the metropolitan cathedral of Hà Nôi from Msgr. Joseph-Marie Trinh Nhu Khuê, archbishop of Hà Nôi. Placed under house arrest between 1963 and 1990, he was named apostolic administrator 'sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctæ Sedis' of Hà Nôi on July 5, 1990, being eventually promoted to the as ordinary of the see on March 23, 1994, succeeding Cardinal Joseph-Marie Trinh van-Can. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal priest in the consistory of November 26, 1994 with the title of Santa Maria Regina Pacis in Ostia Mare. President of the Viêt Nam Episcopal Conference, the Cardinal served furthermore as apostolic administrator 'sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctæ Sedis' of Lang Son and Cao Bang from March 1, 1998 until June 3, 1999. Resigning the pastoral government of the archdiocese on February 19, 2005, the Cardinal died on Sunday, February 22, 2009, aged 89, in Hà Nôi. His solemn funeral mass was celebrated on Thursday, February 26, at the metropolitan cathedral of Hà Nôi where interment also took place.
