"Lawrence Wade Bristol was the oldest dentist practicing in Lockport. He came in 1839 from Syracuse, N. Y., having practiced his profession in that city for eight years, previous to which he had been located in the city of New York. He was born in Canaan, Conn., Sept. 16, 1816. His parents were John B. and Betsy (Lawrence) Bristol, the father a native of Fort Edward, N. Y., and the mother, who was the daughter of Nathan Lawrence, was born in Canaan, Conn.
John B. Bristol was of Welsh decent his father, Benjamin Bristol, having been born in Wales. His wife was of English extraction. He was a millwright by trade and spent all his active life in that occupation. He died in Spring Brook, Erie Co., this state, over thirty years ago at an advanced age.
Lawrence W. Bristol was raised in Sheffield and Lenox, Mass. and received his education in the public schools in those villages.
After leaving school he became an apprentice in a printing office at Homer, N. Y., and worked the "art of preservative" for a period of ten years, eight of which were passed in the city of Syracuse as a compositor on the Syracuse Constitutionalist. Tiring of this business he began to learn dentistry, and later removed to New York and entered the dental establishment of Drs. John and Harvey Brudell as a student. Here he remained for nearly two years, after which he returned to Syracuse and commenced the practice of his profession. In 1839 he removed to Lockport and has ever since resided, devoting his time and attention to dental work.
In 1845 Dr. Bristol was married to Miss Lavinia Harrington of Lockport, She died in 1850, leaving one child, Ada M., wife of Charles Sowter, of this city. In 1852 he was again married to Miss Sophronia Sadler of Lockport. She also died thirty years ago, three children were born to them, two of whom now survive, Anna M., wife of the late Thomas W. Hooker, and Florence, wife of Charles A. Stark of Deluth, Minn.
In political belief Dr. Bristol was a staunch Democrat and has been active and influential in the support of his party. He had served as chief engineer of the fire department three terms, and as alderman from the first ward three years, had been a member of the health board for the extended period of twenty years, besides treasurer of the Niagara Co. Agricultural Society for many years.
He became an Odd Fellow in 1844, was a treasurer of Cataract Lodge for many years.
