Sylvester J Hill was born May 3rd 1846 in Caton, New York to Ephraim and Mary M (Keed) Hill. He was reared and educated in New York and in 1864 at the age of eighteen, he responded to the country's call for troops in the Civil War, enlisting as a member of Company F, 141st New York Volunteer Infantry. He joined that command as a private and served there until the close of the war. After returning from the war he began his professional studies, first in Medicine at Cleveland Ohio where he graduated with the Class of 1872, and practiced Medicine for a few years, in New York, Pennsylvania and Iowa.
On February 2nd 1872 Dr. Hill married Anna A. Sowles, in Geneva, NY; to this union 5 children were born. Alice M. (Adam Peart), Agnes L., Mary E. (Elwin), Edith L., and Ernest. Mrs. Anna Hill passed away on September 10, 1895. On June 11th 1904 Dr. Hill married Mrs. Jennie Benedict (Virginia Jacobus).
Dr. Hill came to the Dakota Territory in 1872 and although he was educated in medicine, the greater part of his professional life was given to dentistry. He was largely instrumental in securing legislation in territorial days which recognized the profession of dentistry and established proper qualifications. He acted as President of the first territorial Board of Dental Examiners, and continued under the State Board until 1894. While for many years he had not been able to practice, he was keenly interested at all times in the advancement of his profession.
In civic affairs of Fargo he had an active interest, serving as a member of the city Council for 6 years, a member of the Board of Education for 3 years, 2 of which he was president, city assessor for 2½ years and was a member of the special assessment commission for 12 years immediately preceding his death.

Hill began his long and distinguished Masonic career when he was made a Master Mason in Shiloh Lodge No. 8 Dakota Territory (later known as Shiloh Lodge No. 1 Fargo North Dakota) on April 4th 1881 and served as Worshipful Master of that lodge in 1883 and served as Grand Master of North Dakota Masons in 1908-1909. He was Exalted a Royal Arch Mason in Keystone Chapter No. 5 Fargo, July 21st 1884 and was High Priest in 1889, 1890, 1892 & 1894, and Grand High Priest 1894-1895. He was knighted in Auvergne Commandery No. 2 March 14th 1893 and was Commander in 1900-1901, and served as Grand Commander 1912-1913. He received the degrees of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, February 12th 1892 and was Master of Kadosh in 1901-1904 and Secretary 1905-1919. He was a member of Mecca Chapter Order of the Eastern Star in Fargo and was Worthy Patron in 1914 and Grand Worthy Parton in 1915-1916. He was also a member of the El Zagal Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. Fargo. Sylvester Hill had, at that time, the distinction of being the only Mason in North Dakota who had served as Grand Master, Grand High Priest, Grand Commander and Grand Patron.
