Calvin C. Britt, 34, of the Antioch Church/Burnt Islands Community died May 14, 1864, as a result of hostile action in the defense of Richmond at Drewery's Bluff in the War of Northern Aggression.

A memorial and re-interment service was held at the Norment Cemetery in Lumberton, the Rev. Mark Meadows of Antioch Baptist Church will be officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Robeson Rifle Guard, Camp 216 and the Fayetteville Arsenal, Camp 168. This cemetery has been renamed the Norment Cemtery which may have been it's original name.

He was the son of Jessie and Mary Britt of Robeson County. Private Britt was a 15-month veteran of the Confederate Army and was involved in various battles at Fort Wagner at Charleston, S.C., Eastern North Carolina, and Virginia.

Private Britt was survived by his wife, Amelia "Emily" Pitman and their seven children; Mary Frances Britt, Gaston C. Britt, Andrew J. Britt, Elizabeth Britt, Benjamin S. Britt, Christopher Britt, and Caldonia Britt.


Children:

Mary Frances Britt married Lewis West.

Gaston Britt married Effie Jane Phillips.

Andrew J. Britt married Mary Ann Phillips.

Elizabeth Britt married Winfield Pittman. Winfield was the son of Henry Pittman and Lincey Ann Taylor. Lincey was the daughter of Lemuel Taylor and Elizabeth Phillips.

Caldonia Britt married Tommie J. Phillips.

There are numerous descendants of these children still living in the Robeson County and surrounding areas.
