Colonel in the American Revolution. Methodist preacher for over 50 years. A member of the first Provinicial Congress. He founded Liberty Methodist Church, in nearby Brentwood. He hosted the ninth session of the Western Conference of the Methodist Church at his plantation home. In 1960, the cemetery in which he is buried was proclaimed a Methodist shrine. Born in the former Bute County in North Carolina. Moved to Tennessee in 1799 to claim his land grant awarded for his service in the Revolution.
