Son of Daniel Bookman of Grimes Co., Texas. From the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Grimes Co., TX, James Franklin Bookman was born in late 1844. His enlistment record shows that he was 18 years old when he enlisted on 20 October 1861 at Ardmore, Texas "for the war". In September, 1862 he was detailed as a guard at Little Rock, Arkansas. He returned to his unit in November, 1862. He was captured at Arkansas Post, Arkansas when it was surrendered on January 11, 1863. Sent to Camp Douglas Prison Camp, Chicago, Illinois he was exchanged in April, 1863. On April 23, 1863 he was sick in a hospital in Petersburg, Virginia with smallpox immediately after his exchange. He returned to his regiment in July, 1863. He was promoted from private to 4th corporal on 1 March 1864. His older brother Paul E. Bookman, (1838-1896) also served with him as did a cousin, Pvt. Joseph F. Bookman who died at Camp Douglas Prison Camp on February 15, 1863.
