James enlisted on November 1, 1861 at Wilton, Arkansas having previously served in Co. F. 5th Arkansas State Troops. He was captured at Arkansas Post in January, 1863, sent to Camp Douglas Prison in Chicago, Illinois and exchanged at City Point, Virginia on April 10, 1863. He received a medical discharge on July 21, 1863, but returned to the regiment at a later date.
