John enlisted in Co. A. 1st Arkansas Infantry at El Dorado, Arkansas on May 2, 1861. He was wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia along with his brother Sgt. James T. Barnett. He received a wounded furlough to Alabama and then returned to his regiment. He was a farmer before the war and was 29 years old at his death.
