Humboldt Union: A special dispatch to the Topeka Capital from Ft.Scott, dated May 5, contains the following: "Rufus Anderson, alias Young, alias Smith, who was arrested at Humboldt charged with making false affidavits to pension claims, was ordered to pay a fine of $1,000. He is an aged colored man and he plead ignorance. His mother's name was Young, his master's name was Anderson and he ran away from his master when he was a slave and enlisted in the war under the name Smith. He applied for a pension in his real name and in this manner violated the law.

Memorial Dedication 20 Sept 2014 at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War conducted the services. Family members in attendance with Rev Otis Crawford offering prayers. Only African-American soldier who served in Kansas during the Civil War buried in this cemetery. Dedication sponsored by the Humboldt Historical Museum.
