Herman Altman was born in Washington D.C. on Nov. 27, 1897, the son of Polish/Russian immigrants, Samuel Altman (1854-1938) and Ida Estelle Cook (1861-1910). Samuel was a hack-man (taxi driver) in 1900 and later ran a livery service (taxi/horse/carriage) and then auto taxi service per census records and newspaper ads. Herman was one of nine children of which six were alive per the 1900 census which listed him and four of his siblings; Pearl Watt (Gibb), Minnie, Balbena (Drennan), and David (1893-1961 - FAG- 48999807 also buried at Arlington). He married Frances Harden in 1924. They did not have any children that survived per census records. While he registered for military service during WW1 per his WW1 registration card, he did not serve for some reason. Then during WW2, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Army 8 Service Command - Finance Dept.. He worked as a taxi driver and then clerked in the Treasury per the 1930, 1940, and 1950 census, and was listed as Chief of Information in the U.S. Govt. Printing Office per the 1950 per census records. He died on July 10, 1953 at the age of 55.
