Purple Heart

D L "Bub" Barham entered the army in 1942 and served until 1946. Seeing duty at the Normandy Invasion D-Day through the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star and many other medals including the Purple Heart for wounds in action. He was given a battlefield commission , in person, by General George S. Patton and he felt honored to have commanded the men under him.

He was saved by the grace of God, Christmas Eve 1944 in a fox hole in Bastogne, Belgium while under siege by the German Army. His favorite song was "When My Savior Reached Down For Me" He always related his salvation to this song and his favorite Bible Verse: Psalms 91:7 "A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee." He later joined Half Way Missionary Baptist Church and was baptized.

After the war he returned home to his parents' farm. He later was married, fathered 2 children, and continued to be a farmer until his death. He was called Poppy by his 6 grandchildren. He raised hogs, cattle, and a few crops. He also enjoyed coon hunting and the occasional turkey hunt.
