Mrs. Amy Ford Born in Slavery

Born in slavery, Mrs. Amy Ford, 105, died Tuesday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Maggie Bagsby, 1156 N. Mosley.

Mrs. Ford was born Jan. 15, 1858, in Gilmer. Tex. Her mother and grandmother were slaves who worked in the field.

At 14, she married Sam Ford and raised 14 children. Of the 10 boys and 4 girls, only three survive.

In 1945 she came to Wichita from Gilmer to reside with her daughter. A member of St. Matthew CME Church, her favorite pastime was reading the Bible and singing hymns.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Bagsby, of the home; two sons, Pierce, Richmond, Calif., and Garmon, La Grand. Calif.; 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Citizens Funeral' Home.
