He was the British Prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals in 1946. He was elected M.P.for St Helens from 1945 - 1958. He was the Attorney General from August 1945 to April 1951.Granted GBE; PC; KC. Was President of the Board of Trade in 1951.Legal Figure. He was Britain's chief prosecutor at the Nazi war crimes trials in Nuremberg 1945 - 46. During the late 1940s he was the British representative at the United Nations. During his legal career as Britain's attorney general he was involved in a number of high-profile cases, prosecuting a major treason trial and an atomic spying case. He was knighted in 1945 and received an even higher honor, becoming Knight Grand Cross, Imperial Iranian Order of Homayoon, in 1974.

Hartley William Shawcross was born in Giessen, Germany, to British parents, John and Hilda Constance (Asser) Shawcross, while his father was teaching English at Giessen University. He attended Dulwich College, the London School of Economics and the University and read for the Bar at Gray's Inn, where he won first-class honours.
