Charles Middleton was the First Lord of the Admiralty during the Battle of Trafalgar. He took up his responsibilities when the financial state of the Navy was in a disgraceful state. He was made Admiral Lord Barham,He was regarded by most as an upright man who wanted to serve God and his country. After the failures in the American War he built up the Navy in spite of opposition of politicians and inefficient staff. He made a report on naval administration that was not studied by those in power. He felt he had to resign his position. He became a Member of Parliament. In 1786 his rector James Ramsay told him about the horrors of the slave trade. Lady Middleton urged him to do something about it, so he wrote to William Wilberforce and supported the anti-slavery cause. He was recalled to the Admiralty, and his work was regarded as a cause of the naval successes of Trafalgar and Finisterre.
