Nellie was born with the last name "Kaiser". She and her sister Anna, born in 1873, were daughters of two German tightrope walkers with the Barnum and Bailey Circus. They were born in New York City and were orphaned. Anna was adopted by Clarence and Alice Allen Gifford. Nellie was adopted by Frederic and Celeste Allen Slocum from Easton. Alice and Celeste were sisters and reared the girls living next door to one another.

In 1902, Nellie Slocum met George Scott, an Irish laborer who had come to the U.S. in 1896 from Dublin. They married in 1902 and had three children, Fred in 1903, George in 1904, and Henrietta in 1907. Nellie found herself a widow in 1907 at the age of 29 following her husband's death from stomach cancer. Nellie and the children worked very hard to make a life for themselves. They truly were survivors, as Fred went on to get a PhD in Physics, and George, Jr. was a successful businessman.
