Catharine was the fourth of nine children. She was baptized on June 20, 1852, at Saint Mark's Church in Appenzell, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. On her 21st birthday, April 17, 1873, she married Moses Ace in Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, and they had one daughter, Bertie, and one son, William.
