Legend places Sara as an Egyptian who traveled to the shores of Southern France together with Mary Magdalene, Mary Salome, and Mary Jacobi, circa 42 AD. Others say that she was a Roma (Gypsy) who helped the three Maries upon their arrival, because Sara was a local healer who practiced begging for alms like the Gypsies do. The Roma (Gypsy) people hold Sara as their own, calling her Sara-la-Kali (Sara the Black). The week long celebration of her life begins every May 24th, when the Roma gather at her crypt and sanctuary at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Camargue, France. "Saint Sara, lead all to holiness through contemplation."
