Muskegon -- James Thomas "Jim" Steward passed away June 8 after a long battle with kidney disease and cancer.
He was born on March 20, 1946 in Corbin, Kentucky.
Jim grew up in Salem, Indiana where he ran track in high school and developed his love of hunting, playing the guitar, and restoring antique cars.
He moved to Anderson, Indiana in 1964 and worked for General Motors for 33 years.
Jim honorably served our nation in the U.S. Army 12th Cavalry from 1965-67, earning the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Air Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Jim was a devoted father who instilled a lifelong love of animals, gardening, and the outdoors in his only child, Foreign Service Officer Rebecca Jane Steward of Washington, D.C.
He moved to Muskegon, Michigan in 1994, where he enjoyed fishing, golfing, boating, and walking along the lakeshore.
His favorite hobby, though, was ballroom dancing with his beloved partner, Susan Church of Fruitport.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Helen Minerva and Lewis Allen Steward;
as well as brother, Frank, and sister, Phyllis Box.
He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca;
brothers, Duane and Mike;
and his step-brothers and sister, Gene and Toby Lawes and Dora Fisher.
A Memorial Luncheon and Honor Guard Service will be conducted Friday, June 16 at 1pm at the VFW Post 7729, 6285 E. Apple Ave, Muskegon MI, 231-788-2998. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the American Cancer Society , the University of Michigan Cancer Center, or the National Kidney Foundation .
