Dick was born in Syracuse, NY, the youngest child of Verne and Rosalie Elwell Murdoch. He was a life resident of Phoenix, NY; it was there that he received his early education. He was a US Navy veteran (1957-1963), serving on, among others, an oiler, the USS Chikaskia (AO-54) and a repair ship, the USS Tutuila (ARG-4).

After his time in the Navy he worked at several places, including Carrier, Nestles, and retiring from Armstrong World Industries in Fulton, NY. He was a boilermaker, pipe fitter, and welder.

It was at Nestles he met his wife of 39 years, Maria, they have three children, Lenore, Maureen and Matt.

Dick loved the outdoors, being in the woods, hunting, and especially fishing. He was always proud of his boat, Shiloh, and hauled it all over to fish, his favorite spots being Seneca Lake for trout, on Lake Ontario he liked Mexico Point and Henderson Harbor. He often took friends out on the water with him; he'd greatly missed going fishing with his friend Stu.

In recent years he had done quite a bit of tractor pulling, using his antique Farmall Super C. He had several trophies that are proudly on display and he was always happy to talk about. All his life he enjoyed playing cards, country music, watching and reading about history. He grew orchids, and liked raising guppies. His favorite color was blue.

He had a good singing voice, and could whistle with the best. He taught my cockatiel, Q, to whistle the calvary charge. It wasn't unusual when he was young to hear his family out singing at the tops of their lungs as they plowed their fields. He always seemed to be singing, humming or whistling, and had an amazing memory for songs, tunes, and lyrics.
