❤️ SO MANY PEOPLE NEVER GET TO MEET A HERO. I WAS SO BLESSED TO BE RAISED BY ONE........MY DAD

Dad's cremains are interred at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego. We are so thankful Dad is Resting in Peace where deserves to be. He is our Hero. He is surrounded by our country's great military families, our beautiful city of San Diego that he loved so much, and all of the wonderful military installations. Fort Rosecrans is so beautiful, sacred, and peaceful. Precious hallowed ground.

Dad was 92 years old when he went to his Heavenly Home to be with God. We are so very blessed, and so very thankful to God, that we got to have Dad with us as long as we did. Dad touched countless lives with his love, kindness, and compassion.

💞 Dad, and Mom, Iva Rose Marie Brakebill Herbert, were married 70 years. They were just as in love the day Dad passed away, as the day they met. Forever Sweethearts on earth, now holding hands in Heaven for Eternity.

Dad was 92 years old when he passed away on July 29, 2013. He was born on March 6, 1921, in Gerster, Missouri, to parents James Draper Herbert and Minnie Thompson Herbert. He served six years in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He served in many battles, all around the world. In one battle on April 20, 1945, his destroyer was hit by a Japanese Kamikaze suicide bomber. I have a small jagged piece of the Japanese Bomber Dad gave to me. It's silver on the inside, and still a little bit of red paint on the outside. My brother has it framed. Dad's career as a Firefighter for the city of San Diego spanned 29 years. He retired as a Captain on the SDFD. He didn't want to retire, but he had to due to the many injuries he suffered in the line of duty. Dad loved being a Firefighter. It was his honor to serve and help protect the citizens of San Diego. Dad's favorite position with the SDFD was that of the Engineer, driving the fire truck, operating all of the controls on the side of the truck, and caring for the hoses and ladders. When he was promoted to Captain, he really missed racing to the fires in the fire engines. I always told Dad he drove his car like he drove the fire trucks. He would always grin with that twinkle in his eyes. He knew that was true. At many events Dad was recognized by the city of San Diego for donating over 22 gallons of blood to the San Diego Blood Bank. At Dad's memorial service, the SDFD honored Dad by having two fire trucks in front of our church. The crews of both fire stations participated in Dad's service. The SDFD had their bagpipes there as well. The San Diego Blood Bank had two of their mobile units in front of the church to honor Dad. Many units of blood were donated that day in Dad's memory. Dad would have been overwhelmed by the beautiful outpouring of love, and he would have felt undeserving of all of the attention. Dad was the most humble man in every way. He didn't think anything about all that he did for people, it's just who he was. Mom was exactly the same. They were a beautiful team. Always giving, never taking, or expecting anything in return.

Dad married Mom, Iva Rose Marie Brakebill, the love of his life. They were inseparable, they were like one person. They were so in love for over 70 years. Two children - my brother Donel, and me, Lynne. Four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.

Dad's Siblings:
Fred Herbert, Marine, WWII
Lemon Lee Herbert, Navy, WWII
Pauline Herbert Norris
John Henry Herbert, Death six months old

❤️ ❤️ Thank you so very much to everyone who leave messages. It means the world to me, and to my family. If you could have known Dad, you would have loved him instantly....and he would have loved you. Dad had big hugs waiting for everyone. His heart was larger than the Universe. He was so loved by everyone. He truly was a man of God. He served God, our Nazarene faith, family, friends, our great country, and the city of San Diego. He was a good and faithful servant to God. Loving, kind, and compassionate to everyone. We know Dad is with our Heavenly Father, and we will get to all be together again. Dad.....Forever Loved, and missed more with each passing day. Our lives will never be the same without him.
