J.R. also served as a law enforcement officer for 26 years, including three years as a deputy for Stephens County Sheriff Marshall Thomas and 10 years for the Duncan Police Department, retiring as a detective. He was recognized throughout the state as an accomplished criminal investigator and trainer. Upon his retirement in 1981, Gov. George Nigh appointed him as Territorial Marshal of Oklahoma.
Pallbearers were Chris Ray and Steve Hawkins of the Duncan Police Department, James Dixon and Eddie Harrel of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and Ron Westbrook and Tommy Edwards of the Stephens County Sheriff's Department. Honorary pallbearers were all of his many dear friends.
