He was the son of James L. "Spud" and Ruth L. Puffinberger Raney of Martinsburg. He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Scott Raney and his grandparents, Bert and Lena Puffinberger, and Lee and Nina Raney.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Ellen Rice Raney; his son, Brian A. Raney and his wife, Elizabeth; five sisters, Melanie Rannells and her husband, Robert; Jan Lorber and her husband, Tony; Kristi Woodward and her husband, John; Dore Nesmith and Jodie Mauck; one brother, Kurt M. Raney; one step-grandchild, Bailey McInturff.

He was a graduate of Martinsburg High School and attended Shepherd College. He was most recently employed by Fasloc, Inc. in Martinsburg. Eric was a member of Shade Tree Car Club in Beckley, WV, where he resided before returning to Martinsburg in 2005. He was also a member of the Norwalk Antique Car Club and the DuPont Retirees Association. Eric was an active member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Martinsburg.
