Philanthropist. Born on August 27, 1796, Sophia was the fourth Child to Joseph, and Lois White Smith. She lived at 22 Main Street in Hatfield, the Smith Family homestead, (now property of Smith College), up until four years before her death, when she built a new home, next door, in which she died in 1870. With her estate she left $387,468 with instructions in her will to found an institution of higher education for women. Smith Academy, later to become Smith College, was the first college for women in the United States. First conceived in 1868, it was chartered in 1871, and opened its doors in 1875.
