Her period of glory was between the last years of the 1890s and the first years of the 1900s, the time known as the Belle Epoque in France. She had numerous lovers, and some of them committed suicide for her. Carolina retired in 1913, at age 45, when the first signs she was getting older began to appear. She retired very wealthy, but her passion for gambling caused her to go bankrupt. Carolina was living in a modest guest house when she died in Nice, France, on April 10, 1965. She was 96. At the time of her death, she had only 609 francs in her current account, as well as some posters of her in her golden years. In her testament, Carolina left established that her few possessions were distributed among the poor people of Porto Valga.
