Jon participated in baseball throughout his years, from teeball and Boone league, to pitcher and first baseman for the varsity baseball team of Fort Dodge Senior High School. He was fiercely competitive and an honorable mention all-conference baseball player his senior year. Jon enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after his 2003 graduation and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Pendleton, California. He assisted victims of the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia after his first tour in Iraq, and was deployed to Iraq a second time in May 2007. He was to return to the States in October of this year. Jon is survived by his mother Denise Rork and father Jon Bonnell Sr., grandmother Donna Bonnell, sisters Sara Bonnell, Brandy Rork, Tasha Rork, all of Fort Dodge, nieces and nephews, Syianne Leslie, Daeshaun Foy, Ethan Leslie, Evan Leslie, Breanna Foy, numerous aunts, uncles, and a long list of friends. He was preceded in death by grandfather Edward Bonnell, grandparents Wallace and Thelma Steding, greatโ€“grandma Mabel Johnson, and aunt Diane Dorothy. *Note his family lists his date of death as August 6 and the department of defense lists it as August 7.
