Christian Fuhrer was the pastor of the St Nicholas Church in Leipzig from 1980-2008. In 1982 he began holding weekly Prayer Meetings for peace on Monday evenings. Only a few attended at first but numbers grew. In February 1988 about 600 turned up and open air meetings attracted larger numbers. the police tried to barricade the nearby streets in May 1989 but even more people turned up in support. The movement spread to more cities in East Germany. On the 9th of October numbers swelled to over 70,000. Police and soldiers stood by and a few arrests were made. A 4,000 strong demonstration had been broken up violently 2 days previously. Two weeks later 320,000 turned up for the vigil.The miracle of the fall of the Berlin Wall came on November 9th.
