George Wallace Emert, 63, of Lake City, who was found dead near the Tennessee-Kentucky state line on Aug. 12, will be buried at 2:30 pm Sunday at Tennessee Valley Memory Gardens in Claxton. Funeral services were held Saturday night at the Tennessee Valley Funeral Home with the Rev. Milton Bolton officiating.Mr. Emert was born Oct. 26, 1929, in Verda, KY.
He had lived on South Main Street in Clinton for three years before moving to Lake City. Before that, he resided in Louisiana. His mother is Edna Emert of Clinton and his father was the late Arthur Lee Emert.He was the owner of the Total Fitness Center on Market Street in Clinton. Mr. Emert held a sixth degree black belt in Judo. He was a Shriner. A veteran of the Air Force, he retired with a master sergeant rank. Mr. Emert was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors also include his wife, Johanna Emert of Lake City; a son, Bryan and wife, Anna of Clinton; a daughter, Sharon and husband Bob Thompson, of Louisiana; one step-daughter, Carolyn Hilton of Lake City; a brother and sister-in-law, Marshal and Betty Emert; five grandchildren, Megan Hilton of Lake City; Jennifer Emert of Louisiana; Jerry and Ashley Emert of Clinton and Bobby Thompson of Louisiana.

CLINTON, Tenn. — Almost 16 years ago, a Clinton businessman disappeared. His body was later found in Kentucky. Detectives at the time soon learned he had been shot, the victim of murder. Now, the Anderson County Sheriff's Department has reopened that case and is looking at a man who is accused of killing two of his stepfathers as the suspect. Charles Edward Mason, 41, is in the Anderson County jail under $50,000 bond, accused in the stabbing death of his stepfather, James R. "Sonny" Brooks.
In 1993, Mason was a "person of interest" in the killing of George Wallace Emert, said Chief Deputy Mark Lucas. Emert was the owner and operator of Total Fitness in Clinton at the time of his death.
Emert was reported missing by his family on June 30, 1993, and his burned car was found in Hinkle, Ky., in Knox County, on July 2, 1993. Emert's body was not found until Aug. 12 when electrical workers cutting trees discovered human remains near a rural garbage dump near Barbourville in Whitley County.
Anderson County jail records in 2001 indicate Mason lived in Barbourville when he was arrested in Clinton for possession of marijuana, public intoxication and for being a fugitive from justice.
Lucas said Friday that Detective Kenneth Bradley has talked to the district attorney general about the case and has officially reopened the Emert case. He would not give details of the case or how Mason may have been connected to the case in 1993. On Sept. 4, 1993, just a month after Emert's body was found, Mason shot and killed another stepfather, Jerry Jarrell. A Knox County (Ky.) Circuit Clerk's records state that Mason shot Jarrell while the two were riding on Bull Creek Road at Woollum, Ky., in Knox County. Mason was charged with first-degree murder but pleaded guilty to reckless homicide-persistent felony offender-second degree in that case. He had also been charged with robbery, but that charge was dismissed as part of the plea agreement. Mason stole Jarrell's car, his wallet and a gold necklace, records indicate. Mason was sentenced to five years in prison, which was enhanced to nine years because of his prior record. However, in 1995, the "court had notice of discharge to home placement with Debbie Mason, a friend," a Knox County Circuit Clerk assistant said of records there. He also received credit for 407 days in jail. Mason had been paroled in 1992 from an Ohio prison.
According to records in Ohio, he served two sentences in Ohio prisons, first in 1988 for aggravated assault, and again in 1990 for carrying a concealed weapon. His sentenced ended on March 31, 1993. Three months later, Emert disappeared and was shot and killed and six months later Jarrell was shot and killed. In the current case, Mason reportedly stabbed Brooks during a family disturbance at their home in the Dossett community between Clinton and Oliver Springs last September. Brooks, 70, died at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in October. Mason was also seriously injured in the incident, but recovered from his wounds. He and his mother, Bertha Jarrell Brooks, 72, were each indicted by an Anderson County grand earlier this month. Mason is charged with voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault and his mother is charged with tampering with evidence, criminal conspiracy to tamper with fabricated evidence, coercion of a witness and false reporting.Bertha Brooks is also being held in the Anderson County jail under $50,000 bond.
