Actress. She shall be remembered as a mainstay of the Swedish stage and screen for more than 60 years. Born Ida Gabriella Stenberg, she was raised in Stockholm from infancy and was drawn to show business early, making her silver screen bow in 1935's "Bambi and I". Gaby continued her film career, earning ever-larger roles, while studying both drama and voice and in 1944 joined the then new Malmo City Theatre. Over the years she was to appear in roughly forty movies while starring in numerous of the Malmo's offerings; she was Tatiana from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in 1944 and again in 1954, earned praise for Franz Lehar's "The Merry Widow" in 1962, and following an extended break from the stage was acclaimed in a 1985 production of "La Cage Aux Folles". As a singer she cut several albums and in the late 1950s had her own television variety show "Gaby Stenberg and a Grand Piano". She received a degree in phonetics in 1978 then during the 1980s was a respected speech and drama teacher at the Vadstema Academy. Gaby was to become familiar to a later generation of viewers as Beatrice Dahlen in the long running series "The Company"; following her 2002 retirement she lived in the Stockholm suburbs where she died after a brief illness.
